The winner of the Terre Haute Flag Contest was Kristin Tony! Her design invokes the following symbolism for the city of Terre Haute: The sycamore leaf symbolizes the sycamore trees that grow along the Wabash River that Terre Haute is known for. The intersecting lines represent our status as the Crossroads of America and the 19 stars represent our placement in Indiana as the 19th state. The gold and blue mimic Indiana's colors but the blue also represents the Wabash River while the gold represents quality, wealth, and good fortunes. The white color used represents hope, openness, and new beginnings which we all wish for our community.
The goal of this page and the Terre Haute Flag committee is to create a flag and a symbol for our town to rally behind. Our goal is to unite our city and create something unique that we can all have pride in and which is very representative of our amazing community!
We have decided that the best way to form this symbol was to rally our people with a community contest where our citizens can submit designs that they believe represents our community and which encapsulates symbols we feel pride in.
In December of 2023 Ethan Page put forth the idea to our citizens for creating a symbol to invoke our city and to create a flag representing Terre Haute. He did this with the creation of a facebook page with a video explaining the reasoning for why our city needs such a symbol.
In January 2024 the first public community flag meeting was held inviting members of our community whom were passionate about the flag to come discuss the idea and provide their input.
Public community meetings were continuously held throughout January and February 2024 at the Vigo County Historical Society to gather public input and a flag committee was formed from attendees whom were passionate about creating a symbol for our city.
This committee decided the best way to create a symbol for our city was to call upon our own citizens to create and then vote on their own symbol so our flag came from and was voted on by our community as a whole. Therefore the following timeline was created for creation of a Terre Haute flag.
Although many more designs came through during the idea stage for the Terre Haute flag the official contest saw 64 designs submitted by 37 different artists whom ranged from middle school aged children to elderly individuals in our community and many more in between! We were delighted to see such passion throughout a greatly varied demographic in our city!
